On the landing is a fascinating set of fourteen paintings showing the intermingling of various Indian races. Painted by Juan Rodriguez Juarez in about 1720, they are the earliest known set of ethnological paintings.
On the stairs hangs a rare and beautiful English pile carpet. This is one of the earliest known carpets of the seventeenth century which omitted the heraldic devices generally found in the work of the earlier periods. On an apple green ground there is a rich pattern of scrolling stems bearing a variety of flowers and fruit. The date 1614 is woven in the lower border.
